Gandhari who was the daughter of King Gandhar and a devotee of Shiva. Gandhari had devoted her mind to Shiva devotion since her childhood, as a result of which Lord Shiva gave her the boon of sleeping sons. Gandhari was hitched to Dhritarashtra, child of Vichitravirya, who was visually impaired since birth. Dhritarashtra wished that his wife should be of eyes so that she could see the world through their eyes, could take over the kingdom. Be that as it may, when Gandhari got the engagement proposition. Keeping her husband's religion paramount, she took a vow to tie a leaf on her eyes for life before marriage. Due to which Dhritarashtra got very angry because of this Dhritarashtra was not made the king of Hastinapur and Pandu's rule was tilak.
Because of his displeasure, Dhritarashtra chose not to allow Gandhari to draw close to him. After knowing this, Shakuni, who was Gandhari's brother, told Dhritarashtra about Shiva's boon and said that your son will fulfill your dreams and he will never be defeated if he has 99 brothers. Hearing this, the ambitious Dhritarashtra saw a way to fulfill his wish. So Dhritarashtra acknowledged Gandhari as his better half.
After which Gandhari got pregnant for more than 10 months but she did not give birth. After 15 months Gandhari got a big piece of moss in delivery. Due to which Satyavati and Dhritarashtra did a lot to him. Angry Dhritarashtra made a relationship with Gandhari's beloved maidservant with the aim of causing more trouble to his wife.
At the same time, Maharishi Ved Vyas reached Hastinapur and told that it is not possible to give birth to sons from the womb of a woman. But Shiva's boon is not in vain, so it is not a piece of meat, but the seeds of Gandhari's one child. Gandhari had also wished for a daughter from God in a boon, thus she is blessed with one child.
After this, Maharishi Ved Vyas created an environment like a womb in one of the pots. After this the first son who was born was named Duryodhana. After this the maid also got a son. Therefore, the number of Kauravas was not one or two, in which Gandhari's children along with sister Dushala and one child belonged to her maidservant.
